February and March, 2010 brought a rash of activity to ALMA volunteers. We were scrambling to find foster homes for all the dogs and puppies that were found. Several dogs were rescued after being dumped in local arroyos Three litters of puppies also needed foster care. Local volunteers and animal lovers came to their rescue.
Locals Sandy Johnson, Bret and Sally, Kimberlina Jory-Mahoney opened their hearts and homes to these abandoned dogs. Sharon and Larry Errington and their sons family rescued a mama dog along with her four puppies way up in the San Bartolo arroyo and brought all safely home where the little family stayed until going on to new homes in Vancouver, BC. Bob and Liz Pudwill of Rancho LaVenta rescued a nearly starved little female dog and are lovingly caring for her until a home is found for her. She, now called Sunny, will also need a hip surgery to repair damage from an old injury. Bob and Liz have been fostering and finding homes for unwanted dogs for many years. Thanks for all you do!!
Sandy Johnson fostered Mamacita for a few months until a wonderful loving home was found for her. Mamacita is now enjoying life on Pender Island, BC. Good job, Sandy!!
Bret and Sally fostered Thelma who had been dumped along with her sister Louise in a nearby arroyo. Louise was quickly adopted by a Los Barriles policeman who just loves her! Thelma spent several weeks living in a beach front condo with Bret and Sally! Not bad for a dumped dog......until she was spotted by a family here in Los Barriles on vacation from Toronto, Ontario. They thought Thelma needed to be part of their family when they first saw her.
The family worked closely with ALMA volunteers who were able to help arrange transportation for Thelma from Baja all the way to Toronto!!! Not easily done. With the help of another local Steve Bell, Thelma flew to Vancouver, BC., spent the night and then flew on to Toronto to be with her new family. We hope to have pictures of Thelma with her new family on the website very soon. Thanks for your help, Steve!
The Errington Family not only fostered mama dog and her four puppies, but, are flying the little family to Vancouver, BC where they already have homes waiting for them. Errington's you are terrific!!
Buddy, who has been in foster care since last Nov. with Ila Buckley and Mary Bowman, will soon go on to his new family in Victoria, BC. Ila, thanks for your patience and finding Buddy a wonderful home to go to. Buddy is great dog! We will miss him.
Kim Fogerty and family worked tirelessly while here on vacation from Vancouver, BC to foster, find homes and transport dogs and puppies back to Vancouver, BC. There, Kim works with a local rescue organization Pennies for Paws who help place these animals in good homes.
A litter of eight puppies were born in Los Barriles over at the Van Diaz boatyard. When they were old enough to leave Mama they were taken into foster care by Harold and Sheila Pierson. Four were adopted locally and four went to Vancouver, BC to Pennies for Paws who had homes waiting for all four!!! The mama dog was spayed and remains in her home at the boat yard.
Lastly, a litter of nine was born in Los Barriles. Three weeks after giving birth the mother was found was dead having been poisoned. The three week old puppies were gently and lovingly cared for by the Mexican family until they were old enough to go into foster care at 5-6 weeks old. They will all visit the vet today and have their first shots. They will be available for adoption soon.
Sharon Hayden, ALMA volunteer, will also foster two of these little girls. Sharon, thank you for being a first time foster care giver for ALMA. I know you will enjoy having the puppies for a couple of weeks. We are already looking for homes for them.
Janel and Sophia continue to provide foster care as well. They have also transported many puppies to the LA area and placed them in wonderful homes. Much appreciated, girls!
Our sincere thanks to all who make it possible for ALMA to maintain a 100%adoption rate!
