Happy Tails

I was adopted April 2, 2008. Thank you for caring!!!!!!

This three month old female was dumped along side the road. On March 8, 2008, a kind passerby picked her up and is providing foster care until she finds her forever home. If you or someone you know may be interested please let me know. She will be spayed and have her first shots in the very near future. She will be a small to medium size dog approximately 25-30 lbs. She will be a wonderful, loyal and intelligent companion for some one.....all she needs is you! Transportation to the United States or Canada
can be arranged.

I thought you'd enjoy these photos of little Joy and Sophie, at their new home in Chico, Ca.
I don't think it gets any better than this...

Happy Easter!!!  After having her for 11 days, we just fell in love with her and called her "Little Bit."  We were sad to see her go but we know she's with a good family.  The family is from Chico where they have a 3 1/2 acre place with cats, pig, and other animals...perfect for Little Bit.  They are currently building a home in BV right by the dive shop there.  The mom's name is Liz and there are 2 young teenagers...boy and girl.  The kids each get a dog.  The boy got one yesterday from some people down the road from us..the Mariseux(sp) at Casa de Los Perros.  The girl took our dog and called her Sophie now.  Happy ending, don't you think?

We found this little dog on the side of the road to Cardonal Wednesday, March 12, 2008.  My husband took her to the Amigos vet and he gave her all her shots and had her spayed.  She looks to be a terrier mix and about 1 year old.  She's loving, friendly, and gets along with other dogs.  She has ridden in a basket on a quad and the backseat of a truck and
traveles well.

While watching the super bowl game, Feb. 3, 2008,  with friends Brian Bonner, rescue coordinator for A.L.M.A.  received a call from a panic stricken Spa Buena Vista resident saying that a large Rottweiler had fallen in an 18 foot hole and needed to be rescued.  Brian, accompanied by other volunteers raced to the site taking a ladder, ropes and flashlights.  After quickly accessing the scene Brian lowered the ladder into the dark hole to reach the frightened dog and down the hole he went.  He fashioned a harness out of heavy duty strapping and attached it to the dog.  Harold Pierson, at the top side of the hole, hoisted the heavy dog topside to safety amid a round of applause from the nervous audience.  We all breathed a huge sigh of relief as she was brought out and onto safe solid ground.

Special thanks to all who participated in this dramatic rescue!

If you are interested in being part of the ALMA rescue team
give Brian Bonner a call at 141-0283.

The last four puppies out of a litter of seven found homes Sat. in La Ribera with assistance of Pam Gray.  The puppies were approximately 9 weeks old.  All had been spayed or neutered and had their shots.   These pups were born to a wild female living in the brush out north of town.

They had been rescued by Brian Bonner who is the rescue coordinator for ALMA.  Brian actually had to go down into the burrow where the pups had been born underground and haul them out one by one.  After going home with Brian, where they had baths and a good meal, four of the puppies went to the home of volunteer Laura.  The puppies were in foster care for about two weeks.

If you are interested in providing foster care on a short term basis please call Sheila Pierson at 141-0267 for more information.  ALMA pays for all food, medical services and supplies for the pups.  Reward:  Sweet puppy kisses and the wonderful satisfaction of knowing that you helped the puppies get off to a good start so they can go on to a new home.

Special thanks to volunteers Laura, Brian and Pam!!   You are awesome!!

Another happy tail - Sidra was adopted Jan. 7, 2008 - she is now in Oregon enjoying a new life, with 3 kids to play with.

"Sidra" is a really cute little dog, smart and has lots of personality. She has been around people and is totally trained. She was found in the dump by the side of the highway by Miraflores.

She is the color of champagne and since she was found in December, we  named her "Sidra" after the Mexican Champagne usually served at Christmas time!

Dr. Felipe in San Jose, got her cleaned up, checked her over and gave her all her shots.  She is healthy about 9 months old, a terrier cross, will not be a very big dog.

She has now been spayed and has all of her shots.

Would love to adopt her but already have one large dog and since we fly back and forth to Canada just can't do it!

She needs a loving home...kids would be great..or maybe someone who needs a companion!

My name is Sidra and I was abandoned!!!

On November 14, 2007, I (Brian)  received a call from Pam Grey that there was a small black dog on the beach behind Loonie Loop that had been attacked by a pack of dogs from town.

When I arrived the dog was still on the beach being watched over by a number of young wind surfers.  I took the dog home with me for the night, tended to her wounds, gave her food, water and a safe place to sleep.

On Wednesday morning I took her to the vets on the North beach and on the way was met by one of the wind surfers from the day before.  He followed me to the vet and was very concerned about the dog.  When told it was likely that the dog was a stray he immediately offered to adopt the dog.  We went into the vet and he took responsibility for the dog, paying for the treatment and promising to bring the dog back for spaying and all the shots.

He intends to take the dog back to Holland with him when he returns home.  I will do a follow up with him in a couple of days to make sure everything is going all right.

       "Dante Chewbacca Chrisman"
Brian and I (Sheila) rescued this pup Nov. 1, 2007.  from a  pile of rubble in Los Barriles .  He was almost dead.  Brian took him  home and nursed him back to health with pedialite, soft food and lots of love.  A trip to the vet to be wormed and a first puppy shot came next.  On Sat. my daughter took pictures of Harold with the puppy, whom Brian had named Congo, and sent them to friends and family along with a note saying the puppy needed a home.  On Monday morning we received an email from a family friend in San Diego saying that he would take the puppy if we could deliver him!  A quick call to Alaska airline a health certificate,  and he was all set to fly out with our daughter.  Upon arrival in San Diego puppy was greeted by the happy adopting family.  Congo is one lucky puppy......from a pile in rubble in Los Barriles where he had been abandoned by his mother to a posh home in Point Loma where he will live happily ever after.

At his new home with his new brother: By the way, his full name is Dante Chewbacca Chrisman, so he is going by "Dante" or "Chuy" to stick to his roots! Viva La Raza! I told my friends we feel like Brad and Angelina adopting foreign babies.

"Chuy living the good life in 2008"

On the day of the last clinic, June 2007, an ALMA volunteer noticed a small young dog alongside a busy highway. She picked up the dog and brought her to the clinic "because she didn't look right". Upon examination it was determined that this little dog actually had , not one, but two broken hips!!! After attempting unsuccessfully to find an owner she was taken to an orthopedic veterinarian. She has had both hips surgically repaired and is now recovering at a volunteers house until she can be placed with a new owner. Her name is Sprit. She is so loving and appreciative she is a pleasure to be with. Thanks to kind hearted volunteers and donors this little dog will be able to live a happy healthy life!

UPDATE  On Spirit: Spirit was taken to the vet who performed her surgery to have her stitches removed yesterday. Upon examination she got a good report. She is quickly making progress and a full recovery is expected! She is anxious to run and play with the other dogs. Spirit will likely go to her new home this week. She will adopted by a very sweet loving little boy of seven and his mother. The little boy, Romero, is anxiously awaiting Spirit's arrival.

Romero's class was recently visited by our education team. The class was taught with age appropriate materials covering basic care and treatment of domestic pets. Each student was presented with an educational entertaining coloring book designed to reinforce the teaching.

When Spirit is presented to Romero he will also be given a food and a water bowl for her, along with verbal instruction in Spanish how to care for her.. Spirit will have her first series of puppy
shots and be de-wormed. She will be spayed next month.

This article encapsulates ALMA's mission to spay/neuter educate and vaccinate. Combined with rescue, emergency medical service, foster care and finally adoption. ALMA proudly serves our community in many ways.

Again, ALMA sincerely thanks all the generous donors and volunteers who make this possible.

August, 2007,  a man contacted an ALMA volunteer and said that he knew of 3 adult female dogs and eight new born puppies rescued by a construction crew 6 miles north of town.  The construction crew had taken care of all the dogs but were now nearing the end of their job and were scheduled to leave.  They could not take the dogs with them.  ALMA volunteers went to the site and accessed the situation.  It was determined that since the animals were all well fed and cared for that they could stay with the construction crew until they left.  In the next two weeks ALMA volunteers took two females to be spayed and vaccinated at the local veterinary clinic.  Dog and puppy food was taken to the construction site to ensure the animals would continue to be well fed.  The whelping mother was given extra high protein food to better nourish her pups.

Through the coordinated efforts of ALMA Humanitaria and Cabo Humane Society it was decided that all the dogs would be taken to the shelter in Cabo San Lucas.  The whelping mother and her puppies will have a separate room where she can care for her puppies until they are weaned.  When the puppies are old enough they will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated and available for adoption.  All three of the female dogs will be spayed, vaccinated and available for adoption.

ALMA is very appreciative and thankful to the generous assistance of the Cab San Lucas Humane Society.  An appropriate donation will be made to the shelter to assist in providing care for these animals.  We are also grateful to the construction crew that rescued these animals from certain death and contacted ALMA for assistance.

Special thanks to all of you who support ALMA to make rescues like this possible. Your donations are much needed and appreciated.  Also, special thanks to ALMA volunteers, Maggie May, Brian Bonner and Sheila Marshall for their efforts in this successful rescue.
