A distemper vaccine clinic was held on Sunday, April 19, behind Chapito's in Los Barriles. ALMA volunteers, Luanne, Shannon, Kathy, Katy, Genie, Sheila M, Vinny, Joanna,
Sheila P. and Veronica were on site to do registration, health screening, testing and vaccinations for local domestic dogs/puppies whose owners qualify for our assistance. Volunteers, you are the BEST!!!
Most of the dogs/puppies came from the area behind Chapitos where the recent outbreak of distemper has been. A total of 51 dogs/puppies received a distemper vaccine. Five tested positive for the disease and were NOT vaccinated. They received antibiotics and will continue with treatment. ALMA volunteers make house-calls delivering antibiotics, dog food and pedialite that are required to treat the sick dogs.
ALMA has recently done three vaccine clinics and has one more coming up. We did two in Los Barriles and provided vaccine for 51 dogs. Because of our pro-active approach the distemper outbreak has been controlled and did not reach epidempic stage. In March ALMA did a vaccine clinic in El Cardonal and will do a follow up clinic the first week in July.
ALMA is very grateful for the support and donations from our community friends and neighbors who helped make this event possible.
ALMA has plans to continue vaccine clinics in the future. If you would like to contribute time or money please email almacares@hotmail.com ALMA has a tax deductible status (501c3) in the U.S. and money can be donated on the website thru PayPal.
